Easter - April Fool Proof

Man seen alive days after coroner pronounces death

In 1976, British astronomer Sir Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that due to the unique alignment of two planets, an upward gravitational pull would make people lighter at precisely 9:47 am that day. He invited listeners to jump in the air and experience "a strange floating sensation".

Dozens of people called in to say the experiment had worked, among them a woman who reported that she and her eleven gullible friends were "wafted from their chairs and orbited gently around the room.” Only then was the immortal line delivered “April Fool!”

Due to the unique alignment of two spring dates, this year’s Easter Sunday lands on April Fool’s Day. Watch out for sabotaged Easter eggs or daffodils that squirt water! Of course the first Easter had nothing to do with chocolate eggs and spring flowers—but rather the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and his public resurrection three days later.

To many twenty-first century sceptical ears, the belief that someone could rise from the dead and offer forgiveness and eternal life sounds frankly laughable. Any moment now we expect someone to say “April Fool!”, we’ll have a good chuckle together, and move on from such gullible thinking. Yet two thousand years have passed and people still believe… At Highfields Church we’re convinced that the story about Jesus Christ is true, beautiful and as relevant today as it has ever been. Not because we refuse to open our eyes to the evidence, but because we have. We’d love to welcome you to one of our Easter Services this year as we consider the story at the centre of it all. You might be in for a surprise…
