What are you living for?
For almost 20 years, Gavin Peacock lived the dream as a professional footballer, following in his father's footsteps. He played more than 100 times for both Newcastle United and Chelsea, memorably hitting the bar with a spectacular shot in the 1994 FA Cup final against Manchester United. When he retired from playing in 2002, he enjoyed a successful career as a broadcaster, becoming one of the most respected pundits on the BBC's Match of the Day and Football Focus. But after commentating on Euro 2008, he made a dramatic change of career, moving to Canada to train as a Christian minister.
Gavin became a follower of Jesus at the age of 18, and it changed his perspective about the purpose of life. "Football was my god as a youngster. All I wanted to do was follow my dad Keith and play football," Gavin told the Daily Express in February this year. "Ultimately it didn't satisfy. I was empty. I knew from a young age that money, fame and reputation wasn't our purpose. We were created to love God and live for him."
- Gavin Peacock will be talking more about his faith and the central message of Christianity at Highfields Church in Monthermer Road, Cardiff on Sunday 5th October at 11.15am.
- Everyone is welcome to come along.
Gavin now works as the pastor of Calvary Grace Church in Calgary, Canada.
Please note: Gavin will also be speaking on the same theme at our Pontprennau congregation on the same day @9.30am
