Home Soil

It's good to be back.

This postcard doesn't come from Torino, I write from home soil. The particulars of British culture began to hit me hard with forgotten familiarity almost from the moment I got off the plane.

I understood all the conversations I could hear in the queue for passport control, and in the queue for the baggage reclaim, and in the queue for the car-hire. Queues! Blessed queues Ordered, patient(ish) and cheerfully British.

There was readjustment to driving on the 'other' side, before which someone stopped to let me leave the car park before them. And then the old familiar style road signs - gloriously blue on the motorway. Stopping at the services, there was Greggs, Marks and Spencer, Boots, WH Smith and Starbucks (no, I wasn't tempted by the last but it has a been while since I last saw the logo.) I nearly ordered a bottle of water in Italian.

It can be the smallest, most insignificant things which underline the fact that I have been away

It can be the smallest, most insignificant things which underline the fact that I have been away, that this still feels like home. It's good to be back. I am looking forward to seeing family and friends again, and connecting with supporters who are so faithful in praying for us. And if you're a Highfields regular, I'm looking forward to seeing you very soon.
