Blink: Popular Culture in Christian Perspective

Have you ever been confused regarding how we are to approach popular culture, such as in film and music?

Highfields Church is putting on a variety of workshops and a seminar to help us learn how to interact with popular culture, consuming it, critiquing it and creating it.

Morning and Evening - Saturday

There is a morning workshop from 9.00am to 12noon at Dalton Street (with breakfast from 8.30am), then a chance to put the learning into practice in the evening session from 7-10pm, by watching a film (Moonrise Kingdom) and then engaging with it in discussion afterwards.

Family Seminar - Sunday

There is an Sunday afternoon seminar from 4:00pm to 6 pm which will look at "Why engage with culture with your kids?"

Popologetics - Sunday Facethebook

On Sunday evening Ted Turnau will speak at facethebook on Popologetics:

It's everywhere . . . all around us . . . so widespread it's like part of the air we breathe. Some people love it, some people hate it, and some just try to shrug it off or pretend it's not there. But, like it or not, notice it or not, popular culture plays a huge role in our day-to-day lives, often influencing the way we think and see the world.

Some people respond by trying to pull away from it altogether, and some accept it without question as a blessing. But Ted Turnau reminds us that the issue is not so black-and-white. Popular culture, like any other facet of society, is a messy mixture of both grace and idolatry, and it deserves our serious attention and discernment. Learn how to approach popular culture wisely, separating its gems of grace from its temptations toward idolatry, and practice some popologetics to be an influence of your own.

The sessions will be facilitated by Ted Turnau, lecturer in cultural religious studies at Anglo-American University and Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.  Ted also teaches on popular culture and Christian worldview at the Wales Evangelical School of Theology (WEST) in Bridgend.

Blink - Popular Culture in Christian Perspective - Ted Turnau

Discussion: Film Focus

On being as wise as serpents

Ted Turnau reviews why and how Christians should engage popular culture

One of the issues that has perennially dogged the Christian church is the issue of how to relate to the culture that surrounds us, especially popular culture. Are we to separate from it ... Or should we go along with the flow ... Both options have their strong points ... But both miss the mark, biblically speaking.
