I grew up in West Wales and was used to going to church, though it didn't mean much to me. Some years later, I ended up living in Cathays, received a leaflet through my door about the services at Highfields and decided to go along. I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people and the feeling they all knew something I didn't and so I kept coming back. Within a few weeks I joined a course to find out more about Christianity.
overwhelmed by the ... the feeling they all knew something I didn't
I learned that God made the world and me too, but that our world and all the people in it are broken - separated from God because we choose to ignore him and go our own way, which the Bible calls sin – and therefore facing his punishment. But God loves people so much he sent Jesus his son to live among us. Jesus never sinned, and so he was able to take our place, our punishment, when he died on the cross.
And the story doesn't end there. Jesus didn't stay dead. He came back to life to give us hope and purpose and life forever. Life now in all its fullness and perfect life after death where there will be no more suffering, crying, death or anything bad.
I knew that I needed to be forgiven.
As I heard about this, my heart was gripped with its truth. I knew that I needed to be forgiven. So I said sorry to God for turning away from him, and thanked him for sending Jesus to die for me. I prayed, and continue to pray, that God would help me to live with him at the centre of my life.
In the last 18 years there have been lots of ups and downs but the one thing that never changes is Jesus. He is my rock, the one I've built my life on, the one that sustains me through all of life's difficulties.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
